Director of Photography rates vary by type of project and by budget. They generally fall into the below ranges:
Narrative: $550-$900/day
Commercial: $1000-$1600/day
Rates for filming days are generally given for a 10 hour day (commercial) or 12 hour day (narrative). In addition to filming days, a scout day with the producer, director, and department heads is typical so we can plan, discuss visuals, and make gear & logistical preparations. I'll certainly do more than a day of preparation either alone, or with you the director, but only one preparation day (the scout day) is generally billed for short films and commercials. For a feature film or longer form projects there likely would be more than one billed scout/prep day as more time would be needed to see all locations and prepare appropriately. The above rates ranges do not include camera gear.
Rate ranges are provided to give a general "ballpark" or offer a high & low, so rate compatibility can be assessed early on.
